CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea — United Nations Command, which plays a pivotal role in supporting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and enforces the terms of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement hosted a ceremony today to mark its 75th anniversary.
The multinational U.S.-led Command invited representatives from 18 Member States, the Republic of Korea, and other international partners.
UNC was established in response to North Korea's invasion of South Korea in 1950.
“Seventy-five years ago, 22 nations demonstrated unprecedented international solidarity, giving their blood and treasure to secure freedom for millions and lay the foundation for the Republic of Korea's remarkable transformation into a vibrant democracy and economic powerhouse,” UNC, U.S. Forces Korea, Combined Forces Command Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson said.
“Today, we honor the legacy of those who served, and reaffirm our collective commitment to peace, security, and the values that bind our nations together.”
Over 1.9 million service members from the UNC Member States provided combat, medical, and logistical support during the Korean War. The conflict lasted three years and took a heavy toll.
Approximately 37,000 Americans lost their lives, over 92,000 were wounded, with 8,000 missing. Casualties among other U.N. forces totaled 16,500, including 3,100 dead. South Korea endured staggering losses, sustaining at least half a million killed or wounded.
A further 38 countries provided financial and materiel support equivalent to 3.87 billion of today’s united states dollars. In total, 60 countries from the world community contributed to this effort.
The signing of the Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953, ceased open hostilities between both sides and established a demilitarized zone.
Canadian Army Lt. Gen. Derek Macaulay, UNC Deputy Commander said UNC continues to facilitate dialogue between parties, enforces the Armistice Agreement's provisions, and enables humanitarian actions such as repatriation.
“Over the past 75 years, UNC has evolved from a wartime coalition defending Korean freedom into a US-led multinational force dedicated to preserving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, in a region facing complex security challenges,” said Macaulay.
Established in 1950, the United Nations Command is the multinational military force responsible for maintaining peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. It facilitates cooperation among allied nations and supports combined defense efforts in the region.
