The American military’s secret weapon isn’t a piece of equipment – it’s the men and women who serve, Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work said today.

Work is wrapping up a trip that took him to Fort Carson, Colorado, and to Stuttgart, Germany. At both locations, he made the time to visit with troops.

In Colorado, he met with members of the 4th Infantry Division and the 10th Special Forces Group. In Stuttgart, he met with enlisted service members and officers of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command.

“Our people are our secret weapon, really,” the deputy said. “They say we have B-2 bombers and missiles that can hit less than a meter away from a target after a thousand miles – and it’s all true. But what makes it all work is the people.”

    Small Groups

Work met with the troops in small groups to find out what’s on their minds. “They want to know what’s going on with the budget,” he said. “They want to know about what are plans for compensation. They want to know what are the priorities for the department.”

The troops also want to know if there is going to be money for training, and they want to know if they will have the right equipment, the deputy secretary said.

The troop visits are important both to him and to Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Work said, noting that the secretary is the Defense Department’s chief executive officer.

“He works on policy, he deals with ministries of defense, he deals with the interagency process on what should be our strategy, et cetera,” he said. “I’m the chief operating officer. I focus on the program. That’s why I like to visit commands, because it helps me put into context what we are trying to do back at the Pentagon.”

Work said he and Carter tell the troops that DoD leaders “not only know what you’re doing, but we’re amazed at what you’re doing. I always get back home motivated after being with them.”
