SOUTHWEST ASIA -- In the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, keeping open the lines of communication is critical to the wing's wartime mission. That effort in communications maintenance includes computer and networking systems which Airman 1st Class Teleasha Riley supports as a member of a client support team.

Riley is a client systems journeyman with the 380th Expeditionary Communications Squadron at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia. She is deployed from the 23rd Communications Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Ga.

"I am part of the client support tem where we fix computers, in-process and out-process personnel, create new accounts, close trouble tickets and help maintain morale minder accounts," Airman Riley said.

As a client systems journeyman with the 380th ECS, Riley is trained as one of the Air Force's computer networking specialists. According to her official Air Force job description, client systems personnel deploy, sustain, troubleshoot and repair standard voice, data, video network and cryptographic client devices in fixed and deployed environments. They sustain and operate systems through effective troubleshooting, repair, and system performance analysis. They also manage client user accounts and organizational client device accounts.

"Without computers, this base and every base world-wide would not be the same," Riley said. "Computers and the world of technology help keep us running the mission every day. It's our job to make sure systems are ready and working all the time."

Riley is trained to perform client-level information technology support functions, the job description states. She's trained to manage hardware and software, performs configuration, management and troubleshooting of systems, remove and replace components and peripherals to restore system operation, and install and configure software operating systems and applications.

She also provides service to end-users for operation, restoration and configuration of information systems and reports security incidents and executes corrective security procedures. Client systems Airmen also establish work standards, methods and controls for preventative, scheduled, and unscheduled maintenance actions. They determine extent and economy of repair of malfunctioning equipment and ensure compliance with technical data, instructions and work standards.

Before she joined the military, Airman Riley attended Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps classes in high school.

"It was great so I decided to join the operational Air Force," said the Chicago, Ill., native. "Now I want to work to get a bachelor's degree in computer science."

As far as serving in the military, Airman Riley said she made the right choice to join.

"Serving in the military is a once in a lifetime opportunity," she said. "You get to travel, meet people from all over and grow in your career field."

The 380th ECS is a sub-unit of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing. The wing is home to the KC-10 Extender, U-2 Dragon Lady, E-3 Sentry and RQ-4 Global Hawk aircraft. The wing is comprised of four groups and 12 squadrons and the wing's deployed mission includes air refueling, air battle management, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of overseas contingency operations in Southwest Asia. The 380th AEW supports operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.
