The U.S. Senate has confirmed Lt. Gen. (Dr.) John J. DeGoes, Air Force Surgeon General, to assume the additional role of Commander, Air Force Medical Command - formally establishing the dual-hatted position that leaders have worked toward for more than two years.
AFMEDCOM was created to centralize command and control of the medics responsible for delivering medical readiness, operational support, and health service logistics to America’s Airmen and Guardians. The new command plays a critical role in delivering ready medics, accelerating medical innovation, and integrating with joint and coalition forces to meet the demands of future conflict.
As Surgeon General, DeGoes continues to lead the Air Force Medical Service, ensuring the programs and policies of the Department of the Air Force are conducive to maintaining the medical readiness necessary for defending America’s interests. Under his leadership, AFMS has prioritized modernization, efficiency, and the ability to operate in contested environments, advancing efforts to meet the challenges of the future fight.
DeGoes brings 35 years of clinical and command experience, including previous roles as Deputy Surgeon General, Commander of the 59th Medical Wing, and as a command surgeon under US Northern Command. He is a graduate of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and is board-certified in internal and aerospace medicine.
