POINTE AUX PIMENTS, Mauritius (June 25, 2025) — Senegalese military officials joined U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa and international partners during the 2025 African Maritime Forces Summit to reinforce their shared commitment to regional maritime security and build on cooperative progress in West Africa.

Senegal’s stability amid a region marked by political unrest has made it a crucial U.S. security partner. At AMFS 2025, leaders emphasized the need for strategic cooperation to counter illicit trafficking, piracy, and the influence of transnational criminal networks operating near Senegal’s maritime borders.

“Senegal continues to prove itself as essential for regional stability and resilience,” said Maj. Gen. Robert B. Sofge Jr., commander of MARFOREUR/AF. “We’re proud to support their leadership in protecting the Atlantic coast and enabling West Africa’s maritime future.”

U.S. Marines are currently training with Senegal’s Compagnie de Fusiliers Marins Commandos, strengthening their ability to conduct small boat operations, secure inland waterways, and execute maritime interdiction missions. These efforts directly align with shared goals of regional self-reliance and institutional growth.

Discussions at AMFS also addressed ways to improve joint intelligence sharing, readiness exercises, and coastal monitoring systems. Senegal’s ongoing modernization efforts and openness to multinational coordination were highlighted as key drivers of security success.

“Our partnership with Senegal is rooted in mutual respect and long-term trust,” said Sofge. “Together, we are working toward a safer, more secure maritime environment—one that enables economic growth, deters illicit activity, and benefits both our nations.”
