POINTE AUX PIMENTS, Mauritius (June 25, 2025) — U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa and senior military leaders from the Republic of Djibouti met during the 2025 African Maritime Forces Summit to reinforce their critical security partnership and chart a path forward for regional cooperation in East Africa.

Djibouti’s proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key global maritime feature, makes it an indispensable partner in regional security efforts. At AMFS 2025, participants emphasized the importance of crisis response readiness, expeditionary logistics, and integrated training between U.S. Marines and Djiboutian forces.

“Our partnership with Djibouti allows us to maintain a forward and flexible posture across the region,” said Maj. Gen. Robert B. Sofge Jr., commander of MARFOREUR/AF. “Together, we are building capabilities that can respond swiftly to humanitarian crises or emerging threats.”

In recent years, U.S. Marines have conducted routine training alongside Djiboutian forces at Arta Beach and Camp Lemonnier. These engagements enhance amphibious operations, reinforce interoperability, and promote mutual understanding in complex environments.

During AMFS, leaders also highlighted Djibouti’s role in multinational maritime security, particularly in counter-piracy and anti-terrorism operations in the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Marine Corps reaffirmed its commitment to joint planning and readiness alongside Djibouti and NATO partners in the region.

“This partnership continues to grow stronger through shared experience and trust,” said Sofge. “We look forward to deepening our cooperation in support of peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.”
