    3rd Infantry Division

FORT STEWART, Ga. – The Fort Stewart Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU), also known as the “Iron Guardian” battalion, marked its 18th anniversary, Friday, June 27, 2025, highlighting nearly two decades of dedicated service to Soldiers overcoming injury, illness and adversity.

Created in 2007 during the Global War on Terrorism, the SRU was established to help wounded and ill Soldiers recover in a structured, supportive environment where they can heal, grow and prepare for their future, whether its continuing military service or transitioning to civilian life.

“The Fort Stewart Soldier Recovery Unit was established as part of the Army’s commitment to provide world-class care for wounded Soldiers,” said current U.S. Army Lt. Col. Donald Johnson, SRU battalion commander. “It was about delivering personalized, comprehensive support to help Soldiers heal, rebuild and prepare for what’s next.”

Over the past 18 years, that mission has remained constant, even as the needs of Soldiers continue to evolve. SRU leaders point to a dual focus of restoring Army readiness and ensuring no Soldier walks their recovery journey alone.

“The mission of the SRU remains as critical today as it was 18 years ago,” said Capt. Manuel Montalvo, SRU company commander. “At Fort Stewart, the SRU’s primary goal is to return Soldiers to duty, strengthening formations with capable, mission-ready warfighters.”

One such Soldier is Staff Sgt. Juan Cordero, who came to the SRU following an injury he sustained during a deployment. The unit’s support helped him recover and continue his Army career.

“I tore the labrum in my left shoulder,” Cordero said. “I came into the program so they could assess the injury and help me recover from it, so I can keep moving forward in my military career.”

Like many others in the program, his experience went beyond physical recovery. He was able to find others like himself who acted as mentors and inspirations within the program.

“Being in the program with other service members helped me connect and build bonds,” Cordero said. “They also showed me ways to better prepare myself through studying, working, internships and other programs I didn’t even know existed before.”

That level of support is made possible by the SRU’s team-based approach, which includes medical professionals, behavioral health specialists and transition coordinators working together toward holistic Soldier wellness.

“Every Soldier who enters the SRU comes with a unique story and set of challenges,” said Montvalo. “From the moment they arrive, they’re surrounded by a team of professionals who create a personalized recovery plan tailored to their needs.”

Looking ahead, Fort Stewart’s SRU remains focused on restoring readiness, honoring sacrifice and helping Soldiers move forward with purpose. Leaders say that means continuing to grow, both in capability and care.

“Thank you,” Cordero said, reflecting on the founders of the SRU. “You really made something that helps people like me get back on our feet.”
