Story By: Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Riley Gasdia

BELLE CHASSE, LA.-- Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) New Orleans held a change of command ceremony at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans Chapel, June 9, 2025.

Surrounded by family, friends and coworkers, Capt. Roger Phelps Jr. passed the baton of commanding officer to Cmdr. Audrey Herrington, previously the executive officer NTAG New Orleans.

“As the executive officer, I have never had to worry about your execution,” said Phelps to Herrington. “You have always been on top of everything. Thank you for having my back this past year. I have no doubt that you’ll be a great [commanding officer].”

Phelps commanded NTAG New Orleans, for the second time in his career, from May 2024 to June 2025. Under his guidance, NTAG New Orleans accessed over 1160 new Sailors to include 151 priority rate Sailors, 91 Navy Accession Training program enlistments, 76 nuclear field enlistments and 40 special warfare/operations enlistments.

“This team has done an outstanding job going above and beyond the mission,” said Phelps. “It has been an honor to be your commanding officer and to have served with you all. Keep up the great work.”

With Phelps at the helm, his team exceeded the 100 percent attainment goal in enlisted production which led to the command receiving the Region East Best Enlisted ‘E’, Recruiting Blue ‘R’ and Recruiting Gold ‘R’ awards for the 2024 fiscal year.

“As I learned the ins and outs of recruiting, I am thankful for your mentorship,” said Herrington to Phelps. “You have helped me grow into the CO positon, but I may still call you for advice from time to time.”

Herrington is a leader for her Sailors. As a Surface Warfare Officer, to an executive officer and now as a commanding officer, she strives to put her Sailors first because a positive work environment breeds positive outcomes.

“Through my time in the Navy, I have found my passion for helping young Sailors find their way towards a better future,” said Herrington. “My priorities are to lead with compassion, communicate with honesty and to support one another. NTAG New Orleans is already a great community and we will continue to surpass expectations.”

NTAG New Orleans’ role in national defense is to bring in new men and women into the Navy’s active and reserve forces. Our area of responsibility spans 91,940 square miles from Baton Rouge, La., through Mississippi and Alabama, past Pensacola, Fl including more than 24 Navy recruiting and Navy officer recruiting stations.
