"The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band

This spring, 1st Lt. Jose Toranzo, Assistant Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, and six additional members of “The President’s Own” spent time in Cherry Point, North Carolina with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. The musicians spent nearly a week collaborating on a vast array of musical skills and ended their time together with a performance for the community.
While visiting Cherry Point, members of “The President’s Own” gave masterclasses that covered skills both on and off the stage, including conducting, performance etiquette, score studying process, sound engineering and instrument-specific instruction. These sessions allowed Marines of the 2nd MAW Band the opportunity to ask questions, receive one-on-one training, observe other musicians and get feedback on their performances. The ultimate goal of the cross collaboration was to improve proficiency, excellence and confidence pertaining to the skills within each Military Occupational Specialty.
At the end of the week, the 2nd MAW Band, combined with musicians from “The President’s Own,” performed a concert for the community to showcase the lessons learned during the week. The group was conducted by 1st Lieutenant Toranzo, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Doggett and Gunnery Sgt. Waller.
“For ‘The President’s Own,’ sharing these experiences with Marine musicians from across the Corps is always special because it brings all sides of Marine music together,” Toranzo said. “These moments broaden horizons and highlight how we each have a part in representing America's music."
