Fort Carson, Colo. - The 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson welcomed Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Ellis as the new commanding general during a change of command ceremony at Founder’s Field, June 18, 2025.
Before arriving at Fort Carson, Ellis served as the director of the Command and Control Cross-Functional Team at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
“In 2003, the Army chose the 4th Infantry Division to lead the digital transformation with new equipment and gear,” said Ellis. “And 22 years later, the United States Army is asking the men and women of this division to drive toward the next generation of command and control capability.”
This task will play a significant role as Ellis oversees and monitors the training and development of the division, building on the work of Maj. Gen. David Doyle has done since arriving at the Mountain Post in June 2023.
While at Fort Carson, Doyle deployed to Poland in support of Operation Assure, Deter, and Reinforce, where he and the Division headquarters provided command and control to U.S. ground forces, enhancing security and cooperation with partner militaries.
Doyle also championed quality-of-life initiatives for Soldiers and Families on post, including the renovation of 14 barracks buildings and the construction of 56 modernized family housing units. Doyle will depart Fort Carson for U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral, commanding general of the III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, spoke about Doyle and Ellis, highlighting the superior leadership of both, as well as the future of the division and FORSCOM under their command.
As Ellis formally assumed his responsibilities as the division’s commanding general, his articulated goals for the development of the division and Fort Carson, coupled with the strong endorsement from division leadership, promised a dedicated focus on enhancing the training, mentorship, and overall readiness of the Ivy Division.
