ANCHORAGE, AK (Jun 17, 2025) Navy Seabees and Sailors from across the fleet, including representatives from the U.S. Naval Observatory, rolled up their sleeves to support local families by volunteering at the Food Bank of Alaska during Navy Week Anchorage 2025. Their mission: to help prepare and pack boxes for the Meals to You summer program—a food security initiative aimed at supporting children and families in some of Alaska’s most remote communities.
Sailors worked side by side with local volunteers, organizing supplies, building food boxes, and assembling packages of essential goods including rice, canned goods, and bottled juices. The project was one of many community engagements throughout Navy Week, and it showcased the Navy’s ability to serve at sea, and at home.
“This experience gave me a new appreciation for the quiet, behind-the-scenes work that keeps families supported. It was humbling and powerful to be part of something so essential to the community.” Said Cdr. Bench Deputy Superintendent at the U.S. Naval Observatory
The Meals to You program plays a critical role in feeding thousands of Alaskan residents during the summer months, especially youth who rely on school meal programs during the academic year. With Alaska’s unique geography and transportation challenges, preparing these boxes takes time, hardworking volunteers, and coordination—needs that were met with enthusiasm by the visiting Sailors. “Serving in the Navy is about more than deployments—it’s about helping wherever we’re needed. Today, that meant lending a hand to fight food insecurity right here in Alaska.” Sadi EO2 Sanchez
The Food Bank of Alaska’s leadership welcomed the Navy’s involvement, highlighting how much more could be accomplished with additional hands. Navy participation sped up operations and boosted morale.
Navy Week is a nationwide outreach program organized by the United States Navy to connect with communities that do not typically have a significant Navy presence. Held in cities across the country, Navy Week brings in Sailors from multiple commands to participate in public events, educational activities, and community service projects. The goal is to educate the public about the Navy’s mission, capabilities, and the critical role it plays in national defense and global maritime security.
Naval Construction Group One (NCG 1) is homeported in Pt. Hueneme, California, and leads and manages the overall capability and readiness of its Naval Construction Regiments (NCRs), Naval Mobile Construction Battalions (NMCBs), Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU), and Underwater Construction Team (UCT). NCG 1 provides the required engineering support that the Navy and Nation need to construct and maintain base facilities, repair battle-damaged facilities, conduct defensive operations as required, and to meet disaster preparedness and recovery missions.
