KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- U.S. Airmen assigned to the 18th Wing host the first Kadena Honor Guard development course, The Final Salute at Kadena Air Base, Japan, May 20 - June 10, 2025.

The Final Salute is a four-week professional development course created for members of the Kadena Air Base Honor Guard, designed to enhance both professional growth and personal development. The course deepens Airmen’s understanding and appreciation of their unique role in rendering military honors.

“Honor Guard members often perform and leave without seeing the full impact of their presence,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Kory Capps, 18th Mission Support Group chaplain and course instructor. “For families in deep grief, military honors offer a moment of structure and meaning - rituals that speak when words fall short.”

Members attending the Honor Guard development course were required to complete reading assignments, written reflections, and presentations designed to deepen their understanding of military honors and its original roots, to where it stands today. Airmen explored topics like the history of honors, their impact on grieving families, and how Honor Guard values connect to professional growth.

“Being in the Honor Guard means embodying discipline, humility, and professionalism - stepping forward to represent the Air Force with pride and dignity in the public eye,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jackson Ordonez, 718th Force Support Squadron base honor guard trainer and unit scheduler. “It’s rewarding to better understand the impact we make and take what we’ve learned from this course back to our shop and into our personal lives."

The program is set to continue on a quarterly basis under the direction of the Kadena Base Honor Guard’s leadership team. Future iterations will aim to involve members from the U.S. Space Force, Army, Marine, Navy, and other Airmen, providing a diverse range of AFSCs and service branches the opportunity to come together and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to serve as a Guardsman.
