    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. — For U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Michael Alvarez, joining the Marine Corps Reserve started as a way to serve while staying in college, but it soon sparked his passion for intelligence work and inspired him to pursue it full-time.

Alvarez serves as an intelligence specialist with Headquarters Company, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division. He recently participated with Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) 3-25 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, as part of his annual training requirements for the Marine Corps Reserve. ITX is a critical Marine Air-Ground Task Force Exercise for the Marine Forces Reserve's training cycle, confirming unit readiness through live-fire and combined arms integration.

Alvarez grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, with strong Marine Corps roots at home. His father, a sergeant in the Marine Corps, served from 1999 to 2003. Throughout his upbringing, Alvarez’s father instilled discipline into his son's way of life. After beginning a degree in sports medicine, Alvarez soon decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, joining the Marine Corps Reserve.

“I was going to college at that time,” Alvarez said. “My recruiter talked to me about the Marine Corps Reserves, and how it’s adaptive to your lifestyle as a civilian. And it intrigued me, so I signed the papers.”

As an intelligence specialist, Alvarez is responsible for providing critical intelligence to Marines in the field, helping them make informed decisions about the enemy. His duties include collecting, recording, analyzing, processing, and disseminating information about enemy targets and locations.

"I definitely have a passion for intelligence now, after my experience in the Marine Corps," he said. "I enjoy doing intelligence because it makes you think at a higher level. You have to really be in touch with your knowledge of not only the Marine Corps, but enemy and adversary as well. Whether that's doctrine, assets or anything like that. I love being able to learn more every day, just from my superiors and even my juniors as well, being able to learn something new."

His experience in a Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa pushed him to pursue an intelligence career full-time. After experiencing the Reserves, Alvarez plans to join the active-duty component.

"I was very fortunate when I first checked into my unit after coming out of the schoolhouse to go on a UDP to Okinawa with Japan," Alvarez said. "And I think that's one of the best things about the Marine Corps Reserves, is that the deployment opportunities are plentiful. I've realized that while the Reserves is good in its own ways, I think it inspired me to go active, because I'm able to live that lifestyle every day and do something I enjoy doing, 24/7.”

Alvarez urges those who are in a similar position in life as he was to consider the Reserves. "Something that I would say to someone thinking about joining the Marine Corps Reserves is definitely do your research,” he said. “It's not for everybody. There are some things about it that might not intrigue you as active might. But I will say this, if you are in college, or you already have a full-time job and you want to be able to have a civilian life, I'd say the Marine Corps Reserves is for you.”

For Alvarez, intelligence is more than a job. It’s a passion, something he loves.
