COMMANDER, FLEET ACTIVITIES CHINHAE, Republic of Korea (May 8, 2025) – U.S. Navy personnel assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) and Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC), alongside members of the U.S. Space Forces, Korea, Republic of Korea (ROK) Fleet and ROK Army, participated in a joint and combined war game at CFAC, May 6 - 8, 2025.

The multi-day training evolution strengthened interoperability, improved decision-making under pressure, and enhanced combined readiness between U.S. and ROK forces operating on the Korean Peninsula.

The war game simulated dynamic, real-world contingencies, requiring participants from multiple services to respond to shifting scenarios that evolved based on decisions made. The goal was to develop critical thinking, foster cooperation, and test the ability of joint and combined forces to adapt in high-stakes environments.

“A major focus of the war game was to challenge our assumptions about how we respond to contingencies in a dynamic environment by creating detailed scenarios that change based on previous actions and decisions,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Winston Massey. “One can think of the challenge as a ‘choose your own adventure’ book. With this in mind, planners and participants must be able to think ahead about how their current actions will influence their decisions in the future. We overcame these challenges in the war game itself by having key stakeholders in the same room to think critically as a team in an open combined and joint forum.”

The war game supports the broader United States Forces Korea (USFK) mission to deter aggression, defend the Republic of Korea, and maintain stability throughout Northeast Asia.

“Exercises like these are about building trust, strengthening partnerships, and making sure we can respond together, quickly and effectively, if the need ever arises,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Sergio Montes.

CNFK is the U.S. Navy’s representative in South Korea, providing leadership and expertise in naval matters to improve institutional and operational effectiveness between the two navies and to strengthen collective security efforts in Korea and the region.
