MOBILE, Ala. – Air Power and Air Superiority are the name of the game for the U.S. Air Force. One of the most state-of-the-art aircraft that provides that superiority is the F-35 Lightning II.

The F-35 Lightning II is a single-seat, single-engine supersonic stealth strike fighter that is a multi-role combat platform designed for air superiority, strike missions, and electronic warfare. It is considered the world's most lethal, survivable, and connected fighter plane.

At Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, supports the base's F-35 mission by building the Australia, Canada, and United Kingdom Reprogramming Lab (ACURL).

The 35,000-square-foot lab and office facility is designed to support developing and implementing F-35 mission data for our Partner Nations.

"This new facility is a collaboration effort with our partner countries and the U.S. Air Force," said Bill Bryant, USACE Mobile District Project Engineer at Eglin. "The facility, when completed, will vastly expand and assist the F-35 program and greatly improve its capabilities. The facility helps our partner nations and Air Force program the F-35 to make it smarter by helping the pilots make better decisions in the air."

The purpose of the reprogramming lab, in partnership with our partner countries Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, is to come up with programming that will make the smarter, or like a drone, enabling the fighter to provide more information to the pilot and those on the ground assisting with missions to make better decisions in real-time.

This type of technology is key to the U.S. Air Force and the F-35 program. The Mobile District is at the forefront in assisting with that Air Superiority Mission.

Paul Sadowski, USACE Mobile District Gulf Coast Area Engineer, said the partnership between the USACE, the U.S. Air Force, and our partner nations was key to bringing this vital facility to Eglin AFB.

"USACE and the U.S. Air Force are working together to improve aging facilities and construct modern facilities to meet the needs of a cutting-edge military, including physical and cyber security concepts," Sadowski said. "From initial concept through detailed design, during construction, to final transference and project closeout, USACE works hand-in-hand with the Air Force to ensure a successful project."

When completed, the new facility will significantly benefit the F-35 mission by increasing the provision of timely and accurate mission data to the front line, thereby improving lethality, survivability, and pilots' situational awareness.

According to Sadowski, USACE and Mobile District are vital in helping the U.S. Air Force improve its warfighting capabilities.

"The Mobile District and USACE are managing contracts and supporting user requests, in partnership with the U.S. Air Force, all in a united effort to improve the Air Force's overall effectiveness, efficiency, capability, and reliability," Sadowski said. "With new security requirements to meet perceived threats, USACE and the Air Force are working to implement new, more stringent guidelines, to include and incorporate improvements to both new construction and renovation projects."
