BAER FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. – Justin Blanchard, a recent recruit with the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, received a congressional nomination and official appointment to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Blanchard is slated to graduate with the class of 2029 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He aspires to be a pilot.
“Part of our mission at the 122nd Fighter Wing is to develop combat-ready Airmen, and we’re proud to support Justin on his journey,” said Col. Scott Boatright, commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing. “We know he will represent the Blacksnakes with honor.”
Originally from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Blanchard applied to the academy once before but was rejected.
“Attending the academy has been a dream of mine for a long time,” Blanchard said. “I see it as a way to do something different and interesting as well as serve my country.”
Motivated by his personal commitment to service, Blanchard moved across the country to enlist with the 122nd Fighter Wing. The decision caused him to lose out on other opportunities, but it was an important step towards achieving his ultimate goal.
“I was able to take such a huge leap of faith because of people like my dad who was always there staying positive and supporting me,” Blanchard said. “I’m very much looking forward to the adventure of attending the academy.”
Applicants to USAFA must first secure a congressional nomination. Fewer than 6,000 students nationwide receive such nominations annually. Of those nominated, only about 1,200 receive official appointments to the academy each year. The academy provides cadets with a four-year program that integrates rigorous academics, military studies, physical fitness, and character development.
