SIGONELLA, Italy – U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella is continuing its commitment to health and readiness by highlighting the importance of colorectal cancer screenings during a recent episode of Patient Informational Minute with Captain Vernon and guests on AFN Radio. Cmdr. Radhames Lizardo, Director for Surgical Services and General Surgeon, joined as a guest to provide critical information about prevention, symptoms, and risk factors. “Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.,” Cmdr. Lizardo said. “But with early detection through regular screening, it is one of the most preventable.”
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for screening, and the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) offers a non-invasive alternative that can be done at home.
Cmdr. Lizardo emphasized the importance of being aware of the risk factors, which include:
• Being over the age of 45
• A personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
• A diet low in fiber and high in red or processed meats
• Obesity
• Tobacco and alcohol use
• A sedentary lifestyle
He also outlined common signs and symptoms to watch for:
• Blood in the stool
• Changes in bowel habits lasting more than a few days
• Persistent abdominal pain or cramping
• Unexplained weight loss
• Weakness or fatigue
Beneficiaries aged 45 and older are encouraged to speak with their primary care manager to determine the best screening method. Early detection can save lives and plays a critical role in maintaining the health and readiness of the force.
U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella provides quality health care to active duty service members, their families, and other eligible beneficiaries throughout the U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility. The hospital’s mission is to advance force readiness and strengthen alliances through patient-centered care, medical training, and operational support across the region.
