CHESTER, Mass. — Ten members of the 104th Fighter Wing’s Rising 6 Council volunteered in Chester, MA, May 9, 20205, to help restore a local church after a council member learned of the need and rallied support.
Church members and their families provided lunch, snacks and desserts for the volunteers and assisted with the cleanup efforts.
Senior Airman Abigail Lozada, of the 104th Fighter Wing Force Support Squadron, said she volunteered as a way to give back.
“The support was needed because they were a small family trying to get this all done, and it helped them a lot to get most of the painting out of the way,” Lozada said.
Volunteers painted much of the church, scraped old paint from railings, cleaned out outdated appliances and removed expired food from the kitchen.
Staff Sgt. Reese Magni, of the 104th Fighter Wing Air Ground Equipment unit, said he participated to support the community and meet new people.
“During our time there, we helped paint both the church basement and the upstairs, as well as clean out the kitchen,” Magni said. “The support was needed, and with the help of multiple volunteers, we were able to tackle several tasks at once.”
Staff Sgt. Amber Riddle, of the 104th Fighter Wing Mission Support Group, coordinated the event with the church.
“It was a rewarding experience, and our contributions significantly improved the state of the church while fostering better relations between the Air National Guard and the community,” Riddle said.
The Rising 6 Council is dedicated to empowering airmen and strengthening community relationships.
