The Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Sentry (MCM 3) welcomed a new commander during a change of command ceremony onboard Naval Support Activity Bahrain, June 5.
U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joshua D. Baker relieved Lt. Cmdr. Stephen A. Ray, who assumed command of Sentry in April 2022.
Before taking command of Sentry, Ray was the operations officer aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) where he completed a 5th Fleet deployment as the Theater Air Defense Commander for the area of operations. Next, Rey will be reporting to AEGIS Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) located at Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Virginia.
Baker, a former Missile Technician, assumes command after his time as the executive officer of Sentry.
Avenger class ships are designed as mine sweepers/hunter-killers capable of finding, classifying and destroying moored and bottom mines. These ships use sonar and video systems, cable cutters and a mine detonating device that can be released and detonated by remote control. They are also capable of conventional sweeping measures.
The U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses approximately 2.5 million square miles of water space and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, parts of the Indian Ocean and three critical choke points at the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal and Strait of Bab al-Mandeb.
