CROWNSVILLE, Md. – Service members, veterans, and community members gathered at Crownsville Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in defense of the nation.
Col. Yolanda D. Gore, Fort George G. Meade Garrison Commander, was the keynote speaker during the solemn ceremony, emphasizing the enduring importance of remembering and honoring the sacrifices of American service members — past and present.
“We gather not only to mourn our fallen heroes, but to celebrate the lives they lived and the legacy they leave behind,” Gore said. “Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the cost of freedom and to recommit ourselves to the values for which they fought.”
During her remarks, Col. Gore spoke on the origins and evolution of Memorial Day, highlighting the transition from Decoration Day following the Civil War to the national day of remembrance observed today. She also acknowledged the significance of Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, a resting place for over 20,000 veterans and their family members, and a symbol of the region’s enduring respect for its military community.
Chaplain (Col.) Keith Goode, Fort Meade Garrison Chaplain, opened and closed the ceremony with the invocation and benediction, offering prayers for the fallen and for the families they left behind.
Representatives from the Anne Arundel County Veterans Affairs Commission, Ms. Vicki Swindle and Rev. James Griffin, read a proclamation from Maryland Governor Wes Moore. The pair also spoke about the Commission’s ongoing efforts to advocate for and support veterans throughout the county.
Mr. Richard Barnes, Chairman of the United Veterans of Anne Arundel County and event organizer, presented commemorative coins to each speaker in recognition of their contributions to the ceremony and their support for the veteran community.
The ceremony served not only as a day of remembrance, but as a reminder of the continuing responsibility to honor, serve, and support those who have worn the uniform, said Gore.
“The price of liberty is eternal vigilance — and unwavering gratitude.”
