Wisconsin Army National Guard Soldiers, along with their families, friends and loved ones, gathered in Oshkosh for a mobilization send-off ceremony for Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, May 31, 2025.
Approximately 700 Soldiers with the 2-127th Infantry Regiment are mobilizing to the Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility in support of Operation Spartan Shield. The 2-127th Infantry Regiment’s mission is to work with NATO partners to promote regional security and stability, dissuade conflict, and protect United States and coalition interests in the region. The battalion will also provide embassy support and train with partner forces across CENTCOM.
Maj. Eric Van Hout, operations officer for the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, served as the master of ceremonies for the event.
“As National Guard Soldiers, we serve the citizens of the state of Wisconsin as the state’s first military responders during times of emergency, but fulfill our federal mission when called,” said Van Hout.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, the Wisconsin National Guard commander in chief, and the Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard, Maj. Gen. Matthew Strub, were two of the distinguished guests in attendance at the ceremony.
“Since the Civil War, the Wisconsin National Guard has mobilized thousands of troops around the world to support and defend our nation’s interests,” said Evers. “Today, all of you continue that tradition through strength, endurance and morale.”
“You represent the very best of Wisconsin,” Evers said to the Soldiers of the 2-127th Infantry Regiment. “I’m immensely proud of each and every one of you.”
Strub echoed this sentiment by speaking about the history and legacy of the 2-127th Infantry Regiment.
“To the men and women of the 2-127 Infantry Regiment, you represent the best of who we are,” said Strub.
“Your predecessors fought in World War I, they fought in the islands of the Pacific in World War II, and in the deserts of Iraq, and the mountains of Afghanistan,” said Strub. “And now, it is your time to carry that torch.”
Evers presented the commander of the 2-127th Infantry Regiment, Lt. Col. Matthew Myers, and the battalion’s command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Randall Hammock, a Wisconsin state flag to be displayed by the unit overseas.
The 2-127th Infantry Regiment, headquartered in Appleton, is nested within the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The 2-127th Infantry Regiment has a lineage tracing back to the 19th century. Most recently, in 2018, Soldiers with the 2-127th Infantry Regiment deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel to provide security to key advisors across Afghanistan.
Shortly after returning stateside, the 2-127th Infantry Regiment was called upon to support local elections and COVID-19 testing sites, as well as multiple civil disturbances in communities such as Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Kenosha.
Soldiers of the 2-127th Infantry Regiment are projected to return home in 2026.
