The Farah Forward Surgical Team and other coalition forces partners assisted in treating a 20-year-old Afghan male gunshot wound victim at Forward Operating Base Farah, Afghanistan, May 18.

The victim was wounded when Taliban forces opened fire while a group of Afghans were working outdoors in a drive-by shooting incident in Shewan village located in Farah province. One other civilian was killed in the incident.

The victim was medically evacuated by helicopter to FOB Farah. Immediate, life-saving surgical care was provided by the FST and Italian forces prior to being medically evacuated to Shindand for further treatment.

"Our job is to take the treatments [from the battlefield] and make it more permanent," said U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Benjamin Hodges, senior enlisted leader, Farah FST, "We stabilized them to the best of our abilities before we transport them to conventional care. Once we get them to the point where they are stable enough for flight, we will push them out."
