CAMBRIDGE, England – Members of the 94th Airlift Wing and the 700th Airlift Squadron visited the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial May 18, 2025, paying homage to their unit's history and the sacrifices made by unit members during World War II.
Eighty years after the war's end in Europe, the visit connected today's Airmen to the legacy of the 94th Bomber Group, which flew missions from Rougham Airfield in southern England from 1943-45. The cemetery, with its sweeping curves of headstones, serves as the final resting place for 3,810 American service members, while the Walls of the Missing honor nearly 3,130 missing in action.
Angel Matos, superintendent of the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, led the 40 Airmen through the grounds, providing a look at the history and the individuals remembered. The cemetery and memorial, located on land donated by the University of Cambridge, is one of 26 sites with 32 monuments overseen by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
The cemetery in Cambridge is the only site located in England focused on commemorating service members from World War II.
Lt. Sam Mascuch, 700th Airlift Squadron, organized the visit, reading historical information to share with others throughout the trip.
“You plan it. You read about it. But seeing it really makes it a reality and humanizes it,” said Mascuch. “It makes you realize you have big shoes to fill.”
The visit to the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial was part of a comprehensive readiness training exercise where Airmen refined competencies for flying low-level over unfamiliar, congested areas, not dissimilar from combat areas. After completed training, Airmen visited heritage sites, connecting the history of the 94th Bomber Group and the 700th Bomber Squadron with today’s mission.
During World War II, four bomber squadrons comprised the 94th Bomber Group, the 331st Bomber Squadron, the 332nd Bomber Squadron, the 333rd Bomber Squadron, and the 410th Bomber Squadron. The 700th Bomber Squadron—now designated as the 700th Airlift Squadron—was part of the 445th Bomber Group.
To document their visit and remember the 151 Army Air Corps members from the heritage units, U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Danny Purcell placed a wreath at the flagpole of the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial on May 18, 2025. Airmen stood at attention as Taps played across the gentle, rolling hills of Cambridge.
Airmen participating highlighted the importance of remembering: the heritage of the wing, what occurred so long ago, and, most importantly, the individuals.
Mascuch said, “It’s easy after so much time to forget and I would want other Airmen and Americans to remember the sacrifices of these warriors. And don’t take it for granted.”
