PANAMA CITY, Fla. – One individual and one team from Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) were honored for their contributions in delivering relevant solutions to the fleet during the Naval Sea Systems Command Excellence Awards ceremony, April 30.
NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. Jim Downey and Executive Director Chris Miller hosted the ceremony, recognizing the command’s awardees from across the global enterprise.
“Each one of you has approached your work with unique innovation,” said Downey. “You’ve thought critically to solve the tough challenges of today and tomorrow. Though you specialize in different fields, you each share this in common: Your efforts, working together as a NAVSEA Enterprise, have helped deliver invaluable readiness and capacity to the warfighter.”
Aaron Cole, NSWC PCD communications support activity (CSA) lead for the Joint and Expeditionary Command and Control (JEXC2) project, received the Data Management Excellence Individual Award for his innovative work developing and delivering a new command and control system for expeditionary warfighting teams. This system represents a major improvement, allowing sailors to focus more on their warfighting duties and less on system administration in dynamic expeditionary environments.
“This award is recognition not just for me but for my team on the JEXC2 project. It is meaningful [because it] shows to my leadership, the warfare centers and the Navy that [the] mission we are charged with does and is making a difference,” said Cole. “I feel that this kind of award and recognition is rare to achieve in someone’s career and this accomplishment spotlight drives home [how] important my team’s work is. It motivates myself and all of my colleagues to continue striving for excellence and deliver the capability we engineer to the fleet.”
The other Panama City winner was NSWC PCD’s Minefield Assessment and Gap Evaluation (MAGE) Team who won the Excellence in Operations Research Team Award for improving the accuracy of minefield planning data. The MAGE Team is comprised of Justin DeHerder, Myranda Brannon, and Daniel Noble.
This team identified errors and missing information in the database used by fleet minefield planners at the Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center, Naval Base San Diego. By correcting these issues and developing an improved review process, the team creatively innovated a more robust and effective minefield planning capability, ultimately increasing the fleet's lethality and survivability.
“This award is an outstanding morale boost to the team as well as an impactful validation of their hard work and dedication to identifying critical issues impacting our U.S. Navy operators,” said DeHerder, NSWC PCD senior mining analyst. “We're incredibly grateful for this recognition and would especially like to thank the NSWC PCD Mine Warfare and Unmanned Operations leadership for their invaluable support.”
Each year, the NAVSEA enterprise recognizes the individuals and teams who go above and beyond in service to NAVSEA’s mission. From the waterfront to warfare centers and headquarters to shipyards, these awardees represent the best of the force behind the fleet.
