Pacesetters begin 4th, final Iraq deployment

CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq – The unit that will see Iraq's Muthana and Dhi Qar Provinces into an era of completely Iraqi-secured peace and stability officially assumed responsibility during an April 28, 2010, ceremony.

The 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, officially assumed the partnership role to support Iraqi Security Forces and the local government from the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

"The cornerstone of our efforts in Iraq is our partnership," said Lt. Col. Jon Howerton of Leesville, La., commander, 3rd Bn., 29th FAR.

The ceremony involved the uncasing of the battalion colors, the unit's flag, signifying the beginning of their mission. The presence of the battalion colors also represents the unit's Soldiers, past and present, and the colors themselves are a physical symbol of the unit's spirit and lineage.

The Pacesetter battalion is undergoing its fourth rotation to Iraq. The battalion has deployed repeatedly in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2003.

Many who were here during the initial invasion will now get to see their hard work pay off as they experience the final chapter.

"Iraq and their security forces have come a long way. Their progress and accomplishments are remarkable," said Chief Warrant Officer John Waterman of Greeley, Colo., task force electronic warfare officer, 3rd Bn., 29th FAR who is currently serving his fourth deployment.

As the Pacesetters set off on what will be one of the last deployments for any unit to Iraq, they remain committed to building upon the foundation of respect, trust and transparency that began over a year ago with the signing of the Status of Forces Agreement.

"Transparency, professionalism and mutual cooperation with Iraqi security forces and provincial leaders are essential in achieving sustainable security and forward progress," said Howerton.
