SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii — U.S. Army Spc. Mark Isbell, a Miami native and air management systems operator, received the prestigious 2025 Army Volunteer of the Year Award. Recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC), Isbell demonstrated exceptional dedication by logging more than 150 volunteer hours to support fellow Soldiers and the local community. The United States Army Hawaii (USARHAW) Installation Volunteer Recognition Ceremony took place at the 604 Ballroom and Conference Center on Apr. 22, 2025.

Among his many contributions, Isbell has taken a leadership role in the Schofield Barracks Designated Driver program, providing safe weekend transportation for Soldiers and helping prevent impaired driving incidents. His selfless actions make him a standout example of service and responsibility, both in and out of uniform.

“I usually pick people up four times a week within five-hour windows,” Isbell said. “Sometimes I don’t get any calls at all.”

Isbell’s volunteer efforts encompass a range of initiatives designed to enhance the well-being of his fellow Soldiers and the broader community. He aims to launch a similar program for his unit and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH).

“My main goal is to start a program for the 94th AAMDC. Currently, there is nothing in place. I’m starting a program that will allow us to work jointly with the Navy and Air Force,” said Isbell.

Beyond his involvement in safety programs, Isbell is actively developing a program known as the 94th AAMDC Kitchen to raise funds for unit events. His goal is to generate support for activities that foster camaraderie and morale among Soldiers.

“I am working on the 94th AAMDC Kitchen. We receive a limited amount of funding for unit events and the 94th AAMDC Kitchen will help us raise more for SFRG events,” Isbell said.

This initiative demonstrates his proactive commitment to improving the quality of life for his fellow service members.

“I like to stay busy. I don’t like sitting around. I like to go out and do stuff,” Isbell said. He also participates in events with the United Service Organizations (USO), Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) and local community activities.

Isbell’s recognition as the 94th AAMDC Volunteer of the Year underscores the positive impact individual Soldiers can have on their units and communities.

“If you like something, then you should improve it,” Isbell said. “I noticed there were a lot of things that weren’t in place for my unit, so I made it my goal to put them in place.”

His efforts not only enhance the immediate well-being of those around him but also set a standard for service and leadership within the 94th AAMDC.

“I am a firm believer in the idea that you should leave a unit better than you found it," said Isbell.

Isbell’s dedication highlights the importance of community and service within the military. His continued volunteerism supports the 94th AAMDC’s mission of leading and integrating Army air defense assets across the Indo-Pacific region.
