TONGYEONG, South Korea (May 2, 2025) – To commemorate the 480th anniversary of Joseon-era Korean navy Adm. Yi, Sun-sin’s birthday, U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) and Republic of Korea (ROK) sailors assigned to Commander, Republic of Korea Fleet attended a tour at key historical sites in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea, April 25, 2025.
“Admiral Yi Sin-sun is a famous war hero in the Republic of Korea navy, and just as his statue stands in front of the CNFK headquarters, his naval battle history serves as a role model for both the ROK and US navies,” said Lt. Josh Kim, CNFK contingency engineer. “Today’s tour served as an opportunity to further strengthen the bond between the two navies.”
The tour began at Tongyeong Chungnyeolsa Shrine, where Admiral Yi is honored, and paid tribute to his noble devotion and sacrifice. The sailors then visited Samdosugun Tongjeyeong, the wartime headquarters that commanded the Joseon Dynasty’s naval forces, where they learned about the Admiral’s life, strategies and tactics. The tour continued with a lunch where they dined on traditional Korean dishes, including grilled fish, kimchee, short-grain rice, and seaweed soup. The tour concluded with a visit to the Joseon Warship Exhibition Hall to view the original Panokseon and Geobukseon, or Turtle Ship, which were the primary warships of the Joseon navy. The sailors boarded the ships, where they viewed and learned about the ships’ weapons systems and recalled Yi’s utilization of them to protect his nation.
CNFK is the U.S. Navy’s representative in Republic of Korea, providing leadership and expertise in naval matters to improve institutional and operational effectiveness between the two navies and to strengthen collective security efforts in Republic of Korea and the region.
