NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY BAHRAIN – Five U.S. Marines and Sailors assigned to Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade were among the 61 graduates recognized during a multi-university commencement ceremony, celebrating academic achievements earned while serving overseas, May 1.
The TF 51/5th graduates included:
U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Sarafina Teat, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, who received an associate degree in business management.
U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Natalie R. Velazquez, a Houston, Texas native, who received an associate degree in cybersecurity and information assurance.
U.S. Navy Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Joshua B. Edwards, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native, who received a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Markus Green, a Cape Coral, Florida native, who received a bachelor’s degree in human resource management.
U.S. Navy Operations Specialist 1st Class Louie Rubin, a Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania native, who received a master’s degree in human resource management.
“The importance of achieving my bachelor’s degree in human resource management is tied directly to my military occupation specialty,” said Staff Sgt. Markus Green, a career planner with TF 51/5th MEB. “A huge part of my job is to encourage junior Marines to use benefits like tuition assistance while balancing active-duty military service. By attaining this milestone in higher education, I’ve become a good example of that.”
The five Marines and Sailors were honored alongside fellow service members, spouses, veterans and Department of Defense civilians who earned degrees at various levels while balancing the demands of military operations in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
“Like it or not, if you’re wearing a robe today, your college experience was vastly different than the average student,” said U.S. Navy Capt. Zachariah Aperauch, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Bahrain. “You put duty before personal pursuits – but you did not forget about them. And now, after hundreds of hours of hard work, the day is finally here for you to stand and be recognized for your amazing achievement.”
TF 51/5th MEB responds to crises and contingencies; coordinates, plans, and executes operations; conducts theater security cooperation; and advances emerging Naval concepts at sea, from the sea, and ashore in order to support U.S. Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet, and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command theater objectives.
