FORT SILL, Oklahoma – Competitors in the 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command’s Best Warrior Competition continued showing their knowledge and physical ability, on March 3, 2025. They were greeted by sunshine and windy conditions as they marched to the classroom to finish covering the last topics of the combat lifesaver (CLS) training. They got a chance to practice what they learned and executed a mock trauma lane. Combat medic specialists from the 469th Medical Ground Ambulance Company tested competitors on properly applying a tourniquet, trauma dressing, and a nasopharyngeal airway (NPA). The Trauma Lane allowed competitors to put it all together as a team.
The big muscle movements of the day took place in the afternoon. Competitors were challenged by the Combat Confidence Course (CCC), the Treadwell Rappel Tower (TRT), and the Teamwork Development Course (TDC).
At the CCC, Soldiers individually ran through a variety of obstacles which included rope climbing, monkey bars, low crawling under barbed-wire, and crossing a rope bridge to name a few. Artillery simulators and machine gun fire reminded Soldiers to move with a purpose as they navigated the course. Cadre were not far behind to ensure Soldier safety and provide more motivation. Many of the obstacles taxed their upper body and core.
The TRT is a 40-foot-tall obstacle. It helps Soldiers overcome their fear of heights and build confidence. Soldiers were instructed on how to use a Swiss seat, practiced rappelling on a small tower, and then executed a course that included a rope climb, ladders, the large rappel wall, rope ladders, and a rope bridge.
The TDC challenged competitors to think and plan while working as a team to solve complex puzzles while under stress. Each obstacle was timed and consisted of getting equipment, wounded personnel and their team across, over, or through various situations. Soldiers had to be quick and decisive in their execution or risk compromising their mission. Artillery simulators and machine gun fire were present further stressing the importance of their expediency.
Competitors ended the day with chow and began mentally preparing for the next day’s event. Stay with us to find out what happens next.
