MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jamilla Newberry, Holm Center protocol noncommissioned officer in charge, coordinates itineraries and lodging for distinguished visitors and oversees promotion and retirement ceremonies, graduations and change of command events.

Before stepping into her current role, Newberry spent three years at Tuskegee University’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment, managing Air Force operations, maintenance funds, overseeing cadet pay, scholarships, uniforms and travel.

Her transition into protocol began after a visit from Chief Master Sgt. Jennifer McKeen, Holm Center command chief. The two met during McKeen’s visit to Tuskegee University, where Newberry served as the unit’s point of contact, and McKeen recognized Newberry’s potential and recommended her for the protocol position.

“Upon meeting Staff Sgt. Newberry, I was immediately impressed by her ‘can-do’ attitude, attention to detail and professionalism,” said McKeen. “She communicated clearly and genuinely, and I knew she’d be a great fit for the Holm Center and our protocol team.”

From coordinating high-profile events and distinguished visitor visits that support more than 1,400 personnel across 151 units, Newberry ensures every detail is squared away.

“It’s the little details that make or break an event,” said Newberry. “Whether it’s arranging lunches, seating charts, or ensuring the flags are in the correct order, everything matters.”

Newberry is part of a two-person protocol team, working alongside Sonja M. Simmons, Holm Center chief of protocol. Together, they ensure every event and official engagement is successful.

“We’re behind the scenes, and the only reason we’re there is to make sure that it goes smoothly,” said Simmons. “If anything was to happen, we’re there to catch it, fix it and then step back out of the way.”

Newberry’s role requires in-depth knowledge of military customs, including everything from flag placement and seating precedence to proper introductions for distinguished visitors and event scripting. She describes a typical day as a blend of coordination, problem-solving and engaging with high-ranking officials.

“Protocol is about customer courtesy, professionalism, and above all, flexibility,” said Newberry. “You have to be ready for change; visits get delayed and schedules shift.”

Newberry has received the Holm Center Warrior of the Week award, the Maxwell-Gunter Top 3 Outstanding Performer of the Month and six general officer coins.

“This role has helped me build confidence,” said Newberry. “I’ve learned to lead, speak publicly and interact with senior leaders with professionalism and respect. I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
