MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- A young child from a third-world country can soon sport a fairly used pair of Nike shoes, which he could otherwise not afford, thanks to Marines aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
Sgt. Jimmy Paiz, the training non-commissioned officer in charge, and Lance Cpl. Aaron Arguelles, a training clerk, both with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, came up with the idea after Paiz almost threw away a pair of gently-used shoes earlier this month.
Arguelles later paired his shoes with Piaz and they decided to donate them for a good cause, since they no longer had a need for the footwear.
This small gesture by the two Marines turned into a base-wide shoe drive.
After teaming up with donateyourshoes.org, spreading the word to leaders aboard the air station and buying a half-dozen boxes, the H&HS Shoe Drive was born March 16.
"We are doing this because there is always someone out there that's going to need some shoes," said Paiz.
The drive has already proven successful, having collected more than 60 pairs of shoes, ranging from rugged combat boots to flip flops in only a week.
"We're filling up about a box per week," said Paiz. "We're expecting to fill up at least four more by the end of the drive."
Marines and sailors from any unit aboard the air station are encouraged to donate any size and kind of serviceable pair of footwear at building 9175 until April 15. Once the Marines ship the shoes to the organization, donateyourshoes.org will distribute the shoes to the needy around the world.
