FORT BRAGG, N.C. – In April 2025, the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command held repatching ceremonies in three separate locations around the world – Fort Bragg, Kuwait, and the Southern Border.
The multi-location ceremony is a visible demonstration of the unit’s integral role in the XVIII Airborne Corps’ warfighting structure - exemplifying the unique and challenging mission of the 3rd ESC.
“The patching ceremony day is historic for so many reasons as we celebrate over 76 years of lineage for the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command,” said Col. Peter Gilbert, commander of the 3rd ESC, XVIII Airborne Corps, during a repatching ceremony in Kuwait. “Wearing this patch is a privilege and allows us all to reflect on decades of courage, valor and heroism of those brave Paratroopers who came before us.”
The core identity of the 3rd ESC – forged through demanding missions, extended deployments, and unwavering trust – remains unchanged. The unit’s Soldiers and leaders continue to embody the qualities necessary to excel in a dynamic operational environment.
At the Southern Border, 3rd ESC Soldiers support directed missions to protect and defend the territorial integrity of the United States. In Kuwait, the unit headquarters is deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield where they provide sustainment and theater-level logistical support throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
Key operations for the 3rd ESC within the CENTCOM area of operations include munitions transfers, humanitarian assistance missions, force protection movements, and vital services which create, and exploit, advantages that achieve objectives, defeat enemy forces, and consolidate gains.
“The formal re-alignment to XVIII Airborne Corps reaffirms our commitment to sustaining high levels of readiness for America’s Contingency Corps,” said Gilbert.
Col. David Alvarez, the rear detachment commander for 3rd ESC, echoed the sentiment during a repatching ceremony at Fort Bragg.
“We need leaders that will be cunning with sustainment solutions, provide endurance to the maneuver commander, and will train and lead with ferocity to ensure we are ready for any mission across the globe,” said Alvarez.
Looking ahead, the 3rd ESC will officially redesignate to a Corps Sustainment Command in October 2025. This transformation includes expanded capabilities through a main command post, tactical command post, and an in-depth future operations cell to increase sustainment integration across the Corps.
This future CSC is a critical component of modernizing the Army’s ability to synchronize global sustainment requirements, improve mobility and interoperability and continue to deliver world class sustainment to supported commanders around the world.
