FORT BRAGG, N.C. – For Soldiers seeking to test their limits, the 1,000-Pound-Club is the challenge they have been searching for. Participants gave it their all in three timed events; the deadlift, the bench press and the squat. The 1,000-Pound Club is the ultimate test of strength and endurance, but it's also an opportunity for Soldiers to build and strengthen bonds with one another.
The XVIII Airborne Corps Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHBN) held the first of what they hoped to be many 1,000-Pound Club lifting events. The event was hosted at the 16th Military Police Holistic Health and Fitness Compound on April 11th, 2025. Soldiers of any rank assigned to HHBN were encouraged to attend.
“The most important aspect of this event is getting people out to give their maximum effort and build morale throughout the corps,” said Staff Sgt. Enrique Perez, a human resources specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, and the noncommissioned officer in charge of the event. “In the future, we hope we can include not just HHBN, but the whole of Fort Bragg.”
Participants were cheered on by their peers as they pushed themselves to new personal records. Those who successfully met the weightlifting thresholds earned a coveted spot in the 1,000-Pound Club, along with bragging rights.
“Events like the 1,000-Pound Club allow participants to reach goals they have set,” said Staff Sgt. Larry Barnhill, a public affairs sergeant and team leader at the 22nd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, and participant in the 1,000-Pound Club exercise.
The event aligns with the Army's emphasis on physical fitness and readiness, offering Soldiers an opportunity to enhance their strength training while building resilience. Organizers highlighted the importance of events like these in promoting a culture of health and wellness within the battalion.
The 1,000-Pound Club event continues to inspire Soldiers to challenge themselves and support one another in achieving their fitness goals, as well as fostering strong bonds between soldiers from around the base.
