    3rd Infantry Division

FORT BENNING, Ga. – The 2025 International Best Sniper Competition isn't just a test of skill, but a chance for elite marksmen from across the United States Military and Allied forces to prove their skills under pressure and outshoot the competition. For 3rd ID Soldiers, this is more than a competition. It's an opportunity to showcase the pride, professionalism, and accuracy that defines their unit. As they compete, they show what it truly means to be a sniper and to represent 3rd ID.

“My snipers strive for excellence in everything they do,” said Simmons. “So for us to be selected to represent 3rd ID on the world stage of the ISC is one of the biggest honors of my military career. “Not Fancy, Just Tough.”

The 3rd ID has a strong history of success in combat and tactical operations. Soldiers have continually raised the bar for performance and its snipers are no exception. Their rigorous training, discipline, and relentless pursuit of perfection is what sets them apart.

“It’s definitely a meaningful thing,” said Spc. Peyton Hall, a sniper assigned to 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID. “3rd ID has a lot of rich history and I'm glad I can be a part and add to it.”

For these snipers, the role involves more than personal pride. Every shot, movement, and decision reflects their comrades and the values they uphold as Soldiers of the 3rd ID.

“This is all I have ever wanted to be or do,” said Simmons. “Being a Sniper is not a job, it's a way of life.”

Sniper training is like mastering an art. It’s about more than rifle skills. It demands patience, observation, and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. It requires close attention to details like wind speed, distance, and target movement, all crucial for success.

“Humility, patience, a high level of attention to detail, dedication to his/her duty, and the ability to think outside the box are all important skills and qualities a sniper needs,” said Simmions. “Skills can be taught, but it’s the individual’s inherent qualities, things you can’t teach, that make a sniper different.”

Snipers are not just marksmen. They are strategic assets, tasked with gathering intelligence, disrupting enemy plans, and providing critical support for ground troops.

“It’s about what’s going on, in the environment and around you,” said Hall. “Everything has a factor on how that bullet goes and where it ends up.”

While the sniper is the one who fires the rifle, the team effort of the sniper and spotter is what counts. Effective communication and trust are critical in both competition and in real-world missions. The relationship between sniper and spotter is a unique and critical aspect of their success.

“The Sniper and Spotter are more tightly knit than any other two occupations in the Military,” said Simmons. “They’re two guys operating as one unified weapon system accounting for range, atmospherics, ballistics, and human behaviors to ensure they’re able to place that single round perfectly on target from extreme distances while remaining undetected.”

The competition shows not just individual talent but the unity and collective strength of the Division. Every shot pays tribute to the countless hours of training, the sacrifices made, and the continuous commitment to excellence that defines the 3rd ID.

“It’s the camaraderie that you build within a sniper section, it’s a sense of community,” said Hall. “A hidden community that I’m glad to be a part of.”
