KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany - The 16th Sustainment Brigade conducts the Fiscal Year 2025 Brigade Soldier, Non-Commissioned Officer, and Junior Officer of the Quarter Competition at Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern from March 4, 2025, to March 7, 2025.
Colonel Matthew Alexander, the Brigade Commander, aims to showcase the proficiency required to perform Soldier tasks in the rapidly changing environment. The Soldier, Non-Commissioned Officer, and Junior Officer (SNO) of the Quarter Competition exhibit this intent.
On March 4, the 16th Sustainment Brigade (16 SB) begins the 1st and 2nd Quarter competition. Hosted by the 39th Transportation Battalion and the 106th Finance Battalion, competitors who advanced from their Battalion quarter boards compete for Brigade titles and a chance at SNO of the Year.
Upon arrival, participants received a safety briefing and competition guidelines and were assigned accommodations. They also underwent measurements of their height and weight.
Competitors and sponsors start the following morning in the 30-degree weather at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks (ROB) Functional Fitness Center to conduct the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). Each competitor pushes themselves to achieve a high score on the ACFT, which is then multiplied by 0.33 to calculate their base score for the competition.
After completing the ACFT, competitors prepare for land navigation and a six-mile foot march in a round-robin format while carrying a 35-pound rucksack. Each participant is assigned eight grid locations corresponding to Expert Soldier Badge (ESB) lanes and stations. Each location on the map corresponds to an obstacle course, a medical lane, and weapons lanes.
On March 6, the competition continues with the 2nd, six-mile foot march, headed for the other designated lanes. The set tasks include Movement Under Fire, Individual Search and Employing Levels of Force, Tactical Radio Communication and SPOT Reports, Camouflage and Signal Techniques, Reactions to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Chemical, Biological, Radiation, and Nuclear (CBRN) threats, and Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS).
On March 7, the competitors presented their Army Service Uniform (ASU) or Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) to a panel of senior enlisted leaders. They answered questions per the Memorandum of Instruction (MOI).
The FY 25 1st Quarter winners are Second Lieutenant Megan Minaudo of the 18 Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), 221st Quartermaster Company, Sergeant (Sgt.) Tyler Hawkings, and Specialist (Spc.) Blake Zweng, both from the 18th CSSB, 515th Transportation Company (TC). Winners of the FY 25 2nd Quarter are First Lieutenant (1st Lt.) Luke Doyle of the 18th CSSB, 493rd Petroleum Support Company, Sgt. Darshan Gurung of the 95th CSSB, 42nd TC, and Spc. Daniel Bolich of the 18th CSSB, 515th TC.
Soldiers competing for Brigade SNO of the Quarter and Brigade SNO of the Year will set themselves apart from their peers.
1st Lt. Luke Doyle says, "What sets me apart from my peers is I live the Ranger Creed every day." "I hold myself to high standards and expectations." He says, "How do I expect to lead Soldiers and NCOs if I don't hold myself to high standards."
The winners from both quarter competitions will represent their respective battalions at the 16 SB FY25 Annual SNO Competition, scheduled for July 29, 2025, in Baumholder, Germany.
"The importance of the Soldier, NCO, and Junior Officer competition is to build a sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps across the Brigade," said Army Staff Sgt. Roque Bermudez, the Brigade Action Officer. "These participants are not just here to compete for the title but also to showcase their physical fitness, tactical knowledge, and technical skills. They are the products of the unit's dedication to train, develop, and nurture the future leaders of the US Army."
