WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas Aviation Museum unveiled a new exhibit honoring the life and legacy of Robin Spurrier, the first McConnell Air Force Base Golden Eagle and a longtime Wichita business leader and aviation enthusiast, during an April 1st ceremony attended by family, friends, and members of the local aviation community.
Spurrier, who passed away in May 2024, was best known for his leadership of Spurrier Chemical Companies, but he also played a role in supporting the aerospace industry in Wichita. The new exhibit highlights his contributions to Kansas aviation, his international business ventures, and his dedication to the Wichita community.
“This is a great thing for McConnell, for Kansas, and for the Kansas Aviation Museum,” said Col. Cory Damon, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Commander. “Wichita has a rich aviation heritage, and honoring leaders like Robin Spurrier ensures that future generations understand the impact individuals can have on this industry.”
At the ceremony were members of the Golden Eagles, a prestigious group of former McConnell Honorary Commanders who have made significant contributions to military aviation. Their presence highlighted the deep connection between the Air Force and the Wichita aviation community. As respected figures in both military and civilian aviation circles, the Golden Eagles paid tribute to Spurrier’s legacy and the enduring partnership between innovators like Spurrier
and the servicemen and women who rely on aerospace excellence to accomplish their missions.
The exhibit, which features artifacts, photographs, and personal memorabilia, was made possible through donations from Spurrier’s family and colleagues. His wife, Jane Spurrier, attended the event and expressed gratitude for the recognition of her late husband’s work.
“Robin was passionate about Wichita and its role in aviation,” said Jane Spurrier. “He would be incredibly honored by this exhibit.”
McConnell has long played a vital role in the Air Capital of the World, working alongside local aviation leaders to advance aerospace innovation. The addition of the Spurrier exhibit is meant to educate the interconnected history of business, aviation, and military service in the region.
The exhibit is now open to the public at the Kansas Aviation Museum, where visitors can learn more about Spurrier’s legacy and his contributions to Wichita’s global impact on aviation.
