    Fasching Day

    BAUMHOLDER, RHEINLAND-PFALZ, GERMANY

    Story by Sgt. Gerald Hill

    16th Sustainment Brigade

BAUMHOLDER, Germany - The Fasching Prince and Princess visit the Baumholder Military Community at the Hall of Champions in Baumholder, Germany, on Feb. 27, 2025.
The local community celebrates "Faschingsdienstag" on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. During this Faschingevent, the 16th Sustainment Brigade is honored by the presence of royalty.
Fasching Prince Jannick I and Princess Liz I are accompanied by their delegation, the Baumholderer Karnevalsgesellschaft (BKG). Colonel Matthew Alexander, 16th Sustainment Brigade Commander, and Command Sergeant Major Jason Towns welcome them. They escort the royalty to the podium to formally introduce the BKG to the U.S. Army personnel.
The BKG and the royal couple remark on the celebration of Faschingsdienstag, with all Commanders invited to the front. The royalty then presents the Commanders with "certificates of disempowerment," relieving them of their duties until Ash Wednesday.
As part of the ceremony, Col. Alexander receives the Fasching Medal of the session, marking the official start of their reign in Baumholder.
“It is a great opportunity to engage with the Baumholder community and exchange some of their tradition events,” said 16th Sustainment Brigade Deputy Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Boos. “It’s great to build community relations.” Fasching is a pre-Lentence celebration that resembles Mardi Gras and Carnival.
The festive period begins on November 11 and lasts until Ash Wednesday of the following year. Celebrations start on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, when social roles are reversed. "Faschingsdienstag," or "Shrove Tuesday," is a day dedicated to seeking absolution through penance.
Fasching Day occurs every Thursday before Lent, with festivities in Baumholder continuing until Ash Wednesday. During this time, a "disempowerment certificate" allows the Commander to join in the celebrations, with the Fasching Prince and Princess presiding over the events.
