BAUMHOLDER, Germany - The 16th Sustainment Brigade hosts a celebration commemorating 80 years of partnership with the community in Baumholder on March 18, 2025.
Colonel Matthew Alexander, the 16th SB Commander, aimed to organize a joint parade with the Brigade, Baumholder Military Community, and the city of Baumholder to honor the eight decades of partnership between the city and the U.S. Military Community.
In the morning, the district mayor, Bernd Alsfasser, and the city mayor, Günther Jung, lead a march through the city center. Along with the U.S. Army Marching Band, Col. Alexander, Col. Ofal Tuneke, and Captain Frank Zimmer—soldiers of the 16SB and the Bundeswehr—march along Kennedyalle and Brühlstraße to Brühl Stadium.
Baumholder, a small town in southwestern Germany, is celebrating the time of U.S. military presence, highlighting the strong bond between the United States and Germany. This relationship has fostered peacekeeping and community support since World War II.
At the time, the U.S. military's role in Baumholder began as a training ground and evolved through the Cold War as a deterrent to Soviet aggression. It remains an essential training site, known for its facilities like the Baumholder Training Area, or "The Rock."
The presence of American service members and their families has significantly impacted the local community by enhancing cultural exchange, boosting the economy, and improving infrastructure. Local businesses have adapted to serve the military, creating job opportunities and fostering relationships through joint events and festivals.
Over time, the bond between U.S. military personnel and Baumholder residents has deepened, leading to lasting friendships. As the military’s focus shifted to training with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies and humanitarian efforts, soldiers have continued to engage in community activities, strengthening ties and promoting goodwill.
With their American and German flags waving, the participants assemble on the sports field while the band plays the national anthems of both countries. Col. Alexander highlighted the day's significance by stating, "We're not just looking back; we're also looking at where we’re going.”
