GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Sailors assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Empire State co-hosted New Jersey/New York’s 2025 Regional SeaPerch Competition, March 29.
“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to co-host the NY/NJ Regional SeaPerch Competition this year,” said Cmdr. Elliott Skiles, commanding officer of NTAG Empire State. “The Sailors of this command stand as a powerful testament to the STEM opportunities available in the U.S. Navy, and their skill, dedication, and innovation at sea showcase how a foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math can launch extraordinary careers that shape the future.”
Hosted by Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst, SeaPerch guides students on building an underwater robot while supplying educators with the tools and training to help them through the process.
In building a sense of community, U.S. Navy recruiters from New York and New Jersey volunteer to organize and facilitate the competition as a means to connect with students and talk to them about opportunities the Navy can provide them in STEM careers.
"Being the emcee for SeaPerch was a very rewarding experience for me," said Electronics Technician (Nuclear) 1st Class Jarrett Sullivan. "I was very pleased with watching how the students utilized their problem-solving and critical thinking skills in order to build and test their robots, skills that I know my fellow shipmates and junior Sailors have. I think it's super important to cultivate such skills, and it's clear that the competing schools and the U.S. Navy share that line of thinking. I can't wait to see even more competing schools next year."
NTAG Empire State encompasses regions including New York City, Long Island, and northern New Jersey. It consists of 32 Enlisted Recruiting Stations, with additional stations in Germany and Italy. The combined goal of these stations is to attract the highest quality candidates for America's Navy, ensuring a strong and capable force for the nation's defense.
