KENT, Ohio - May 4, marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic events at Kent State University in 1970. Four students lost their lives and nine others were injured as civil unrest and war divided a nation.

Each year, this anniversary serves as a reminder of the awesome responsibility and unique challenges that accompany military service in the National Guard. From Lexington and Concord, to Gettysburg, to the Global War on Terror, the citizen-soldiers and-Airmen of the Ohio National Guard have honorably served our communities, state and nation.

While our missions are rarely easy, they are often clear cut – provide medical aid, stave off the floodwaters and defend our nation. And sometimes, Ohio's Guard members are called upon for more complex endeavors. During these times, our mission and the decisions of our service members are much more difficult and their consequences potentially dire, as was the case on May 4, 1970. The Ohio National Guard community will never forget, and always honor, the students, families, community members and Guardsmen whose lives were forever altered that day.
