KABUL, Afghanistan - More than 340 Afghan national police cadets passed their final examinations Wednesday in the Adraskan district of Herat province.

The Italian Carabinieri attached to the Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Teams and Police Speciality Training Team provided training to the cadets.

Of the 341 new officers, 13 (including one female officer) are members of the Herat police regional command who completed a course in computer science.

More than 325 of the new ANP members will become agents of the Afghan National Civil Order Police, the specialized force for public order.

Recruits enrolled in the program trained for 16 weeks. An ISAF unit validated the standards and effectiveness of the training provided by the Carabinieri at the regional level.

The members of the Carabinieri developed a three-stage training cycle. In the first stage, recruits receive training on the concepts of law and professional ethics, learn to use weapons and receive training on improvised explosive devices.

The second stage of training involves shooting, self-defence, topography, driving school and combat training. The third stage teaches advanced techniques of raiding, arrest and movement in an urban environment.

Threats faced by the Afghan police require them to develop and maintain operational standards comparable to those of military members.

The Carabinieri trainers combine the know-how of a judicial police force with technical capabilities and tactics of a typical military unit.

The members of the Carabinieri training teams do not simply train Afghan police forces, but are embedded with them. They are collocated with their Afghan colleagues to share the lives of the garrison members and their field activities.

In the future, the PSTT Carabinieri members will begin training ANP to be able to instruct other recruits of the ANP force.
