BAGHDAD — At the Consolidated Receiving and Shipping Point yard located on Victory Base Complex, a recent expansion has created a need for additional lighting. Engineers assigned to 1434th Engineer Company lent a hand to help meet that need April 15.
The CRSP yard, managed by personnel from 169th Seaport Operations Company, is the central receiving and shipping point for Iraq. Materiel destined for, or leaving, Iraq, must go through the CRSP yard before reaching its final destination.
"The CRSP yard operates at all times of the day," said Spc. Jessie Gonzalez, a native of Cold Water, Mich., assigned to 169th SOC. "Due to the continuous operations, we need the extra lighting in the new part of the yard."
"The additional lighting will give additional safety to the Soldiers that work around the yard at night," said Staff Sgt. Virun Kitchen, a native of Kalamazoo, Mich., assigned to 1434th Eng. Company. "When the project is complete, the Soldiers that work in the CRSP yard will be able to conduct safe 24-hour operations throughout the entire yard, with a decreased risk of injury during the evening,"
However, the project was not only beneficial to those working within the CRSP yard; it was an excellent opportunity for some of the new engineers to demonstrate their talent.
"The lower enlisted truly got a chance to come together as a team, and show off their skills," said Eric Zilhman a native of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. "From digging trenches to laying cable to installing the lights themselves, we were able to step up and show off our knowledge," explained Zilhman.
