SAMARRA, Iraq —Iraqi police took control of a checkpoint near the Golden Mosque from the National Police, during a Change of Responsibility ceremony, April 14.
According to Mike Craft, who works with the Salah ad Din Provincial Reconstruction Team, the transfer was a significant milestone for Samarra.
"It was gratifying to see (Sons of Iraq) leaders, NP and Iraqi security forces commanders, members of the City Council, the Mayor, and the people of Samarra all milling around and smiling, Craft said.. This ceremony marks the beginning of a rational well planned operation to return control of the city to the City Administration and the IP."
The ceremony was broadcast by many Iraqi media stations throughout the Salah ad Din province and there were only minor incidents reported that opposed the transfer of responsibility, all of which occurred before the ceremony.
"When the caravan is moving, there are always a few dogs yapping at the camels' heels," said Iraqi Police Col. Gayath, the commander of the Samarra Joint Coordination Center, as he expressed his feelings toward the incidents.
Seven other checkpoints are scheduled to be fully returned to the Iraqi security forces by the end of June.
