Ezra Kotcher, an engineer at the Air Materiel Command (a precursor to the Aerospace Systems Directorate), worked with others to solve the aeronautical problems facing high-speed aircraft designers. It was Ezra (Left) that suggested aircraft be designed and built solely for the purpose of research. The Bell X-1, powered by the XLR11 rocket engine, developed in part by the Rocket Propulsion Lab (another Aerospace Systems Directorate precursor), was the first of the research aircraft to be built. On October 14, 1947, the X-1 aircraft became the first aircraft in level flight to break the sound barrier. The historic flight was piloted by U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager.
