Cliff Simpson, a key member of the gas-turbine research and development team, believed that a high-bypass engine was possible, and he proved it. This led to the development of the TF39 engine making possible the giant C-5 transport. He was crucial in many other technological leaps such as the Lightweight Gas Generator (LWGG) program that began in the late 1950s, focusing on the engine’s core turbine and combustion areas. LWGG advances contributed to the design of an afterburning, low-bypass turbofan with 25,000 lbs of thrust. This engine technology lives on in the powerplants of the F-15 fighter and B-1 bomber. Cliff eventually became Chief of the Propulsion Division, a precursor to today’s Aerospace Systems Directorate.
