The Aerospace Systems Directorate contributed many things to the U.S. moon landing effort. Chief among them, the Rocket Propulsion Lab (a precursor to the AFRL Rocket Lab) was integral in the development of the F-1 rocket engine. The F-1 provided the thrust that the Saturn V rocket needed to boost the lunar lander out of earth’s atmosphere. Each Saturn V was powered by five F-1 engines. Other predecessors of the Aerospace Systems Directorate contributed to the effort with developments such as fuel cells to power the spacecraft throughout its two-week mission, optical improvements to polycarbonates that were used as helmet transparencies and high-speed, heavy-load parachutes that on return to earth, enabled the capsule to land safely in the sea.
