SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Army National Guard's Camp Withycombe received the Secretary of the Army award for environmental restoration.

Tad Davis, deputy assistant secretary for the Army for environment, safety and occupational health, presented Jim Arnold, environmental restorations manager, Oregon Military Department, with the Secretary of the Army award for environmental restoration, at a ceremony March 22 at the Oregon Military Department in Salem.

Arnold oversaw green remediation technologies at the Oregon Army National Guard's largest ever restoration project at Camp Withycombe in Clackamas, Ore.

"The work you are doing here is gaining national and international recognition," said Davis. "It supports the Army sustainable mission and had the foundation of environmental principles we are looking for."

The project at Camp Withycombe involved the remediation of six former small-arms training ranges in preparation for a major Oregon Department of Transportation highway development project.

The Oregon Guard implemented a cleanup strategy that reduced negative impacts on the environment, minimized or eliminated pollution at its source and reduced waste to the greatest extent possible.

"It's very rewarding to have the Oregon National Guard recognized by receiving this award," said Jim Arnold.

By receiving this award, the Oregon National Guard will now be considered for the Department of Defense award for environmental restoration.
