FORT STEWART, Ga. – Soldiers assigned to 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) gathered at Marne Chapel to witness the induction of four Dogface Soldiers into the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club (SAMC) here, May 15, 2024.

Staff Sgts. Christian Cruz, Jesse Rambo, Jakirah Rhone and Anthony Upton were inducted into the club after demonstratng outstanding leadership, professionalism and unwavering dedication to their roles as noncommissioned officers (NCOs).

The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, established within the U.S. Army, serves as an esteemed organization exclusively for NCOs who exhibit exemplary leadership, exceptional performance and a profound commitment to the welfare and development of fellow Soldiers.

“As of now, there is only about 2% to 3% of noncommissioned officers in the United States Army that are inducted into this club, so to be a part of that 2% to 3% is prestigious in of itself,” said Sgt. 1st Class Lateasha Edmonson, president of the Fort Stewart SAMC.

“Everyone's working hard, everyone's going to college, everyone is trying to get degrees, but when you are going out for something like Audie Murphy, it truly sets you apart and it truly shows you're a servant leader and you want to continue to grow,” regarding Soldiers who seek induction into the club.

The new members of the SAMC celebrated their achievement among their comrades and reflected on the opportunities to make a positive impact in the community.

“I’m honored to be a part of such a great organization and I’m ambitious and ready to get some new soldiers in the club and start making things better around the community,” said Staff Sgt. Anthony Upton, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, assigned to 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID.

“My platoon sergeant brought it to my attention that it was an opportunity and that it was a great thing to do here, and then also just seeing how such a positive impact the organization can have on not only the NCO Corps but with the community in general,” Upton said about why he sought to join the organization.

To be inducted into the SAMC, Soldiers must pass and Army Combat Fitness Test; scoring a minimum of 90 points in each event, and complete a series of administrative boards to assess their knowledge of Army regulations and leadership skills. This process also includes memorization and recitation of the extensive Audie Murphy biography.

“When I initially started, I did not want to go through with it, because I felt as though I lacked a lot of experience doing it,” said Staff Sgt. Jakirah Rhone, a native of Uniontown, Alabama, assigned to 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd ID.

“I hope this inspires not only soldiers but leaders to step outside their comfort zone and take those challenges because it was not easy for me. I had to keep training really hard to attain that 90% in each event, but when you step outside your comfort zone, it comes with rewards and it comes with recognition and it makes you feel better inside when you complete something you doubted yourself in initially,” Rhone said.

Audie Murphy, born on June 20, 1924, in Texas, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most decorated Soldiers in American history. Enlisting in the U.S. Army at the age of 18, Murphy's valor and bravery during WWII earned him numerous awards, including the Medal of Honor, for his actions in combat.

The club serves as a beacon of excellence within the ranks, recognizing those who go above and beyond their call to service. It is a reminder of the timeless virtues of honor, courage and selfless service that have always defined the American Soldier.
