    22nd Air Refueling Wing

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE Kan. – Air Accidents are always a possibility, and for Airmen at McConnell, being ready for the worst is a priority as 22nd Air Refueling Wing squadrons worked in unison to mitigate a simulated air disaster during a major accident response exercise April 25.

To start the training, firefighters simulated putting out an aircraft engulfed in flames surrounding the aircraft, followed by medical personnel who gave aid to injured survivors. When the mess was cleared, explosive ordinance disposal Airmen approached the crash with caution, making sure there weren’t any simulated explosives at the scene.

"The purpose is to conduct an annual MARE and utilize the 2024 airshow as a scenario for the exercise," said Master Sgt. Kristy McCauslin, 22nd Medical Group flight chief. “The 22nd MDG personnel set up in the morning as they would for the 2024 air show and were evaluated on their response per the 22nd medical contingency response plan.”

The 22nd MDG medical coordinated with other teams prior to the MARE to make the exercise a success. The 22nd Maintenance Squadron provided a hangar for the clinical teams to operate from and the field response team operated out of the fire station as they will for the 2024 air show.

The 22nd Logistics Readiness Squadron provided a bus and driver for the 22nd MDG to transport personnel and gear.  Additionally, the 22nd LRS bus and driver were available when the 22nd MDG requested additional manning be picked up after the exercise incident occurred.

“22nd MDG personnel did a great job providing patient care throughout the MARE,” McCauslin said. “The MARE was a great opportunity for all the medical contingency response plan teams to come together and test out their capabilities. Not only did these teams get to work together with response teams within the 22nd MDG, but they were also able to work with other 22nd teams.”

The MARE exercise is held annually.
