This month’s Unit Spotlight is the 117th Comptroller Flight, a part of the 117th Air Refueling Wing (ARW)!
Comptroller Flight consists of individuals that cover specific areas of expertise within the office to make sure people get paid, go to training, get the necessary supplies or process travel requests for deployments or training. It’s the job of Financial Management and Comptroller specialists to manage the accounting records and systems.
“We do military pay and civilian pay and we process everybody’s travel. We also have our budget team, where we process documents to buy things, cut contracts, work unfunded things throughout the year so that we can get things on top of what we are budgeted to get and anything anyone else needs as far as problem solving,” said 2nd. Lt. Tristan Hordge, the 117th Comptroller Flight budget officer.
Technical training for Financial Management and Comptroller specialists is around 7.5 weeks and is held at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.
“It is a one stop shop. Our technical school is fairly entry level, broad knowledge across the spectrum. When you get to your unit there are two tracks, the Financial Operations (pay and travel) side which is your pay and travel. Then you have the Financial Management and Analysis (analysis and budget) side, which is the accounting and budget side,” said Hordge. “So, when you get to your base, where you go just depends on the needs of your unit. Every base is different, so they don’t focus too heavily on teaching just one side because you might wind up on either side.”
They work with many different financial systems, Major Commands (MAJCOMS) and leadership across the wing to make sure the money allotted is spent and used responsibly. Hordge said that each person in the shop has a specific job, and some are secondary leads for other jobs within the office because of the processes it takes to get things approved.
“We work with other units to get them what they need so that we can work with the other MAJCOMS to get the funding set for us in a timely manner, so we aren’t sending people out the door with nothing,” said Hordge. “I mostly oversee the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Budget, and that is everything that we buy. Active-Guard Reserve (AGR), travel, buying stuff with a Government Purchase card (GPC) and cutting contracts for the base, almost all of that is O&M. That is how our civilians and technicians also get paid. I oversee that and work with the units to establish the budget for the year. I keep them on track to make sure they don’t overspend, but that we also spend as much as we can, so people get what they need.”
